The Myra J. Reed Mathematics Award is given to the senior who, upon the recommendation of the Department of Mathematics, has demonstrated general excellence in mathematics throughout their undergraduate career.
Dr. Myra Reed was a member of the Ã山ǿ¼é mathematics faculty until she passed away in 1987. The award that bears her name honors the excellence that Dr. Reed embodied as a teacher, a mentor, and a colleague.
Criteria
Students who have met the following criteria will be considered for the award.
- All requirements for the major, including the Senior Comprehensive Project (or its equivalent), are completed by the end of the academic year.
- The student’s GPA in mathematics courses numbered 200 or above is at least 3.25.
- The student’s overall GPA is at least 3.25.
Students who will have met the first criterion, but only one of the second and third criteria, will be considered for an Honorable Mention. Students who will have completed the requirements for a mathematics minor and will have met the second and third criteria will also be considered for an Honorable Mention.
In addition to the criteria stated above, the student’s performance in mathematics courses and on the Senior Comprehensive Project, level of participation in departmental activities, and potential for future work in mathematics will be considered.
Meeting the relevant criteria does not guarantee receipt of the Myra J. Reed Mathematics Award or the Honorable Mention. The award winner(s) are chosen by the department from among the available candidates and the faculty may choose not to grant an award in any given year. In extraordinary cases, the department may choose to recognize a student who does not meet the relevant criteria stated above.
Historical notes
Between 1995 and 2021, the Myra J. Reed Mathematics Award was called the Mathematics Award, and prior to 1995, it was called the Mathematics Medal.
The Mathematics Department had previously named the Pi Mu Epsilon Award in honor of Dr. Reed. The PME Award was given to the senior members of the campus Pi Mu Epsilon Chapter who had demonstrated general excellence in mathematics and provided exemplary service to the Chapter. However, the PME Award is no longer being given.
The photo of Dr. Reed teaching an introductory computer science course was taken by Jerome Pawlak for the 1980 Bonadieu.
